Dear friend,
My hope stands not on two, but on
four-hundred-and-forty feet. I'll tell you how:
Socrates was tried by an Athenian court for inciting the youth
and sentenced to death by poisoning
(ask Plato how he downed that cup - let's not digress here)
but that wasn't it.
Two hundred-and-twenty out of the five hundred jurors
had in fact found him not guilty.
(I wish to meet them sometimes, but let's not digress here)
Thus, dear friend, my hope stands not
on Socrates' two feet,
but on the four-hundred-and-forty
feet of those two-hundred-and-twenty jurors.

 

पाया 

विंदा करंदीकर  

मित्रा, माझा आशावाद दोन पायांवर उभा नसून चारशे चाळीस पायांवर उभा आहे.
कसा ते ऐक: 
तरुणांना भडकाविल्याच्या आरोपाखाली सोक्रेटिसवर अथेन्सच्या न्यायालयात खटला झाला 
आणि त्याला विषाचा प्याला घेण्याची शिक्षा झाली 
(ती त्याने कशी भोगली ते प्लेटोला विचार, ते विषयांतर होईल) 
पण सारे काही एवढ्यावरच संपले नाही. 
त्या खटल्यातील पाचशे ज्यूरींपैकी दोनशे वीस ज्यूरींनी त्याला निर्दोष ठरविले. 
(त्यांना कधीकधी भेटावेसे वाटते, पण ते विषयांतर झाले) 
मित्रा, माझा आशावाद  सोक्रेटिसच्या दोन पायांवर उभा नसून 
त्या दोनशेवीस ज्यूरींच्या चारशे चाळीस पायांवर उभा आहे.
